In the old days in the old (virtual) datacenter you manually configure a fabric when you need. When the new servers require additional switch you add it. When your cluster require a LUN for CSV you add it. In the cloud world we want to do things automatically so we have to prepare, configure and pre-provision our fabric in order be able to automatically provide these resources.

Microsoft started to use the term Fabric to denote the infrastructure.

Objects in the infrastructure

  • Software
  • Servers
  • High-speed connections
  • Switches that enable access to storage devices in a network
