How to set-up networking in VMM?

There are a lot of steps how to set basic networking in VMM. In the following articles I will guide you how to set simple networking with and without isolation (network virtualization). You always have to start without network virtualization for the basic Logical Network and your infrastructure servers and then you can continue and set-up network virtualization.

I suggest you if you want to set-up the network virtualization then proceed step by step, set-up network without isolation and then move to the Hyper-V isolation and use benefits that the network virtualization can offer to you.

Naming conventions

I will show you naming conventions that I created for this series. I use prefix for every object that should help you to recognize the type of the object according its name.

You do not have to follow but I suggest you create own naming convention. It is important because when you start adding more and more networks and profiles then you need some system to easily identify what network belongs to what environment, customer or cloud.

It is handy to name everything with different names. The only exception is VM Network with no isolation and Logical Network that resides under this VM Network.

Spaces and special characters in the names

When you have for example only one Uplink Port Profile then you can call it UplinkPortProfile or Uplink Port Profile without any problem. The spaces are not a bad thing. The only issue with the spaces is that you will have to use quotes in the PowerShell when you will want to refer the name of the object.

You are able to use Unicode characters but you should avoid that.
